Day In The Life Of A Non-Participant

The good doctor tells me
That God is not the issue here
But I hear much about sin
As though the universe required it
As though men needed it
And not just our slithering monarchs
Dragging poor Satan out of his sleepy insolence
To remind us who we work for
With such sacred persuasions
As coin, crucifix and truncheon-

These things are created to be used
Heaven and Hell
Faith and Fear
But our pet golem dichotomies
Have been too long at play
Grinding innocent bones
Not for bread
But simply for kicks
Or, as the newsman says,
For the good of the nation
